When you get in triple threat and look at your defender and see his hands down, shoot immediately, this is the 1st shot read. This is how Kobe Bryant shoots in situations that LOOK very difficult to shoot from. The 2nd shot read is space to hold the ball in your shot pocket. If you can hold the ball in your shot pocket without your defender touching the ball you have space to shoot.

Now before we keep going I have to make sure you realize the importance of being a good shooter to attack from triple threat. You cannot attack from triple threat if you can’t shoot or have a 2 piece inefficient shot. If this is the case for you, seek a coach in your area and get a consistent jump shot.

Also you should always get in triple threat only in areas within your range, so if your only a good shooter from midrange don’t try attacking from behind the 3point line. All your defender has to do when your out of your range or cant shoot at all is back off you, dare u to shoot and you’ll be completely out of the game.

Now lets talk about drive reads. The 1st drive read is your defender playing chest to chest defense; which is when your defender is all in your face and your body’s are touching. If your defender dares to do this immediately drive and the ref will almost always call a foul and in the rare cases where there’s no foul called you will be able to easily get by him since he’s put himself in such a vulnerable position.

Now the 2nd drive read is the foot read. Specifically you’re looking for which foot your defender has forward when guarding you, whichever foot is forward is the side you should drive on. Almost all players get in defensive stance with one foot slightly forward; so this read is almost always available.

Now what does driving on the front foot do for the offensive player? Well it’s physically impossible to slide/shuffle your feet laterally without both of them being parallel, so when one foot is forward and u drive on that foot your defender will have to drop that foot and then start moving.

This means no matter how slow you are you will always have an advantage when driving on a defender’s front foot.

Now, remember all these reads must be quick; you’ll have to train yourself mentally and physically so these things become a natural part of your game. If you watch mayo or Kobe play you can see how these reads have become second nature to them. You have to strive to achieve this to.
